Historically, closing off the border to Mexico means we'll have a worse problem in the country with illegal Latino immigrants living here. Can't remember the name of the book, but I read it a couple of years ago and it's got a lot of studies. At any rate, we go through these "close the borders" phases fairly regularly every couple of decades. When the borders are porous, the workers go back and forth, come here, make money, go home, repeat cycle. When the borders are tight, they stay and make money and just send it home.

Unintended consequences and all that.
