Beneath the terrific "flatness" metaphor runs the very strong possibility of severe conflicts, ethnic being one, and a global economy out of control, building up livelihoods, only to quickly destroy them.

The "flatness" sounds right. It seems to be inevitable. But, that does not mean it has to be "bad" for us - in terms of competitiveness.

If you look at it from a competitiveness point of view, if we prepare for it, we can come out more than okay. As for the others, they will and have to look out for themselves. And, I think they will. That may be pollyanish, but sometimes reality is like that. If you prepare properly, you can have win/win situations.

Just because we have to compete, does not mean we have to fight like dogs. That may be construed as pollyanish, but it could also be reality.
