Unlike Molotov, Tariq Aziz is Catholic. My recollection is that there was a fair amount of contact between Aziz and the Vatican long before the recent war.

Given that the main reason stated for the most recent war against Iraq was WMD, and given that Aziz was particularly well placed to know the truth about the status of Iraqi WMD programs, I've wondered several times since then whether Aziz spilled the beans, and the Pope knew that the war was over something that didn't exist anymore. Well, I guess it would be fair to say that the war was over Saddam's fugheadedness, which did exist, but was scarcely a good reason for war.

He probably did not anticipate how relatively few casualties would be directly caused by the war, especially when balanced against the sanctions and the people killed by Saddam's regime.
