Seems to me that everything you say is right on target, except that I do think that it is walking, not smoking, that keeps a lot of Europeans thinner than Americans. When you drive your SUV to a fast food place and eat a burger with 1,500 calories in it . . .

In addition to wine, beer is 1000% better in the United States than it used to be, though I guess a lot of people just go right on drinking Blatz or whatever.
