The recession only played a small part in the tremendous increase in debt. The Bush tax shifts (shifting the burden to future generations) was the main factor - not spending.

Here is a chart that shows the percent of tax revenue and expenditures as a % of GDP:

Clearly the Bush tax shifts are the culprit.

I like tax cuts - but not tax shifts.
