"That was the peak price in the peak year at the height of the oil embargo when people were waiting in line for an hour or two to get gas."

These type of historical arguments miss a lot of factors, such as the one you mentioned. For example, I suspect that the inflation adjusted price of gasoline was much higher than $3 a gallon in 1910...

I recall waiting in line for gas in 1974. NOT 1981. Plenty of gas in 1981. Albiet expensive.

RE:"We are in dire need of strong conservation policy, and as things stand right now, the tax credit for hybrids will expire and the tax break for huge SUV's will continue."

Maybe the tax credit shouldn't expire but the Hummer is the poster child for over 6k # vehicles. Its aimed at business trucks and the Hummer happens to fall into the category.
No matter, the Hummer is toast anyway.

RE:"The up side down world of the Bush administration..."

Yep, Bush makes everyone that drives an SUV, drive an SUV!

I don't know why people want to stick their heads in the sand on this issue. The oil companies are under investing in new exploration and not investing in new refining capacity, and demand is accelerating.

We are in dire need of strong conservation policy, and as things stand right now, the tax credit for hybrids will expire and the tax break for huge SUV's will continue.

I would love to say your idea is brilliant and worthy of a Nobel prize........but, in fact, it isn't. It just makes good sense.

So why isn't the White House pushing such a policy? The short answer is that such a policy is not in the best interest of their supporters. Its as simple as that.

To compare that price to today's price and suggest that today's price isn't expensive is deceptive.

I didn't say that gas was not relatively expensive at this time. The point is that it is not at an all time high in real terms.
