In fact, you've already passed judgement. What about the innocent wives who are exposed to AIDS and the innocent babies to be born with AIDS? And why is the pill a sin? Are married people in Africa or South America not allowed to have sex without the fear of conceiving a child they can not afford? Outside marriage and innocent wives in this context imply someone had sex outside marriage - how does the pill prevent AIDS? Another tejek nonsequeter. There were several different issues in that one paragraph. Apparently, you become confused. I should remember that you judgemental types can only deal with one subject at a time. I promise to 'dumb down' in the future! You are simply unwilling to even for a moment consider their beliefs before you pass judgement. They believe that God says birth control is forbidden - because it prevents life. On this point there is little argument, condoms do in fact prevent new life. They believe that because their priests, their intermediary with God, tell them its true. As most people become more educated, the priests' stranglehold loosens but that isn't the case in Africa......not yet.As for AIDS and disease prevention, this is another issue entirely. No one is condeming anyone to death, if you could simply understand that the church has also said sex outside marriage is a sin - if that advice were followed they would not have the continued rampant spread of AIDS. True but we are dealing with human beings, not robots. As a consequence, AIDS has spread like wild fire. The reality is that kids are being orphaned at a devastating rate. In some African nations, half of the adult population between the ages of 20-45 has been lost. This is an unmitigated, economic and social disaster and the church continues to stand on principle. Where is the logic? Warning, I am about to bring up a new issue......what about the people who get AIDS through blood transfusions or through non sexual contact. Are they just poor, innocent victims who are to be ignored? Warning, I am about to bring up still another issue......if the church can not be part of the prevention, why can't they be part of the cure? Why are they not providing medicines to the people who have contracted the disease? Uganda is one of the few African nations that has finally gotten AIDS under control but the cost has been horrendous:"Uganda is estimated to have a population of about 25-30 million, although the extreme mortality of AIDS has had an effect on this - the figure would otherwise be higher. Again, due to AIDS, life expectancy in Uganda is 42 years3. It was estimated in a UNDP report that 51% of the population did not have access to healthcare facilities in 2001. Uganda achieved independence from the UK in 1962.4 <snip>During the early 90s, HIV prevalence peaked at over 30% and until recently has been much higher than that in some areas. Uganda is now estimated by UNAIDS to have about 530,000 people living with HIV/AIDS. Uganda's Ministry of Health Surveillance Unit estimated that there were about 1,050,5557 people living with HIV/AIDS by end of December 2001 and that there had been over 940,000 HIV/AIDS-related deaths since the onset of the epidemic in the country. avert.org Even if the church adopted/supported wide spread condom use - there is little likelyhood the culture of the people of african nations would use condoms. I noticed in the article that within the church they have attempted to use the lesser sin argument, that adultery is sin 6 but murder is the 5th in the 10 commandments. It has been the history of primitive peoples that what the church tells them, most do.re:They also know that most Africans can not afford the AIDS medicine that will extend their lives Nice straw man - it's prevention, not medication after the fact that is the issue. Prevention is not economically out of reach even for Africans. Even in the USA most Catholics ignore the Churches position on condom use for contraception, so using condoms for health protection should be even less of an issue for most believers. Read my lips.....the prevention tactics of the church are not working. And I disagree, the decline of AIDS cases in the US was due mostly to the use of condoms, and not abstention. And I have to assume that at least some of those condom users were Catholics.
