I have a bit different approach, and it is a traditional one that played a major role in establishing the U.S. as the greatest nation this planet has ever seen---

good ol' fashioned American ingenuity.

Traditionally over the last 200 years or more, the world has beaten a path to our doorway because we build and devise things the world wants. Why not apply that to the energy situation? Build a better mousetrap, in other words, rather than lord it over the world.... if, for example, we were in the position of Saudi Arabia and the oil-thirsty economies of the world were begging us to give them drops of oil, at first glance that might seem like a strategically desirable position.

But stop and think for a bit---much of the world already resents the hell out of us for varying reasons. Sometimes the reasons are very good ones, sometimes they are hallucinations, sometimes it is just a case of envy and sour grapes on the part of people who have all the emotional maturity of your average 3 year old.

So were we to be holding the oil the world wanted, that would tend to exacerbate the already huge store of world resentment. That would not help us in global affairs. Resentment is not a fruitful emotion, and anything that can be done to neutralize resentment should at least be considered.

Instead, what I am suggesting is to offer the world superior products that are alternatives to things they already have. That has been our legacy---they had candles, we gave them the electric light bulb. That sort of thing.
