1830: American prophet Joseph Smith, who provided the theological foundation of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and other Mormon denominations, claimed that the church that he organized on this day, at Fayette, New York, restored the ancient, primitive Christian religion. The converts whom it attracted during the next decade followed him from New York to Ohio, Missouri, and Illinois.
