Not sure what the case would be with accident victims. However, I know of a case of a woman in an extended care facility who suffered a repeated series of strokes which essentially destroyed her brain. In this case, the docs suggested withdrawal of the feeding tube as there was no hope of recovery. One of the woman's daughters had seen her mother a couple of days before and immediately agreed. The other daughter had not seen her in a few weeks and insisted on another visit before making a decision. After seeing her mother, she also agreed and called the doc to let him know. In the meantime, the mother had pulled out the tube on her own and it was simply not re-inserted, resulting in death about a week later.
