I look at them as representing a "basket of stocks", just as the dollar index measures the dollar against a basket of other currencies.

It was a similar "basket of US stocks" that climbed 1,500,000 percent in the 20th century ! Of course, that is just a reflection of the ever-smaller yardstick.... currencies.

I wonder how the price of gold measures up against the same yard-stick ? (I ask because Howy suggests I am not looking at a long enough time frame lol!)
