I don't think the US is counting on India to do much of anything, let alone contain China...

Otherwise India would be in Burma already, and trying harder to get advanced European and US weapons instead of the Russian stuff.

China is much more likely to contain India.
With alliances with Pakistan and absorbtion of Burma, extensive activity in East Africa....add in a larger economy and development of their own weapons systems.
