We invaded Iraq -- not exactly a sign of respect for their national sovereignty. Iraqis have a greater ability to determine their own future today than they did before the invasion. We continue to have an army of occupation in Iraq. That is a debatable assertion. Certainly we have an army in Iraq but it isn't there to make Iraq part of or subsidiary to the US. And there is no indication that we are willing to "negotiate" permanent bases -- and that goes for Afghanistan as well. There is no indication that we would impose permanent bases by force if the host governments rejected the idea. Tim
