Many of the elites in the Gulf States have gun to their head :

Massive US forces in the region. Extensive US intelligence activity.

Initially protecting the elites from Iraq.
Now protecting the them from Iran.
Soon to be protecting them from Democracy.

This is sufficent to make it a given that the majority of funds will go to US securities.

Also, gold doesn't pay interest.
There is a preception in some circles that the price of gold is manipulated.

Last, the oil prices were very high, many of them recycled the money into US equities. Some of them did pretty well - see the Saudi guy (Tallil ?) who invested in Citibank and Apple.
