That is very interesting.... I had thought that the only likely explanation for their harmful 'expand the money supply until the markets squeal' actions was a misguided belief in the POLITICAL THEORY promoted by Gingrich of "starve the beast" --- the theory (dare we say: "hope"?) that depriving the government of funds would ultimately FORCE the government to cut spending. DESPITE the available evidence (second Reagan term, Bush I term, current Bush II term) that it hasn't worked out that way... that government spending, new programs and foreign adventures just roll on anyway, with the Feds just printing more and more fiat currency and deficit-borrow willy-nilly... and that "starve the beast" needs something MORE to make it effective (Balanced Budget amendment? Crash in capital formation???) But, the theory that you put forward, that there are GOALS of Authoritarianism and increased power for Big Government makes a lot of sense too. Something to think about.
