My little Shih Tzu exhibits a lot of rat terrier characteristics, has a VERY powerful jaw, and would be extremely menacing in the right situation, with a little team of dust mops like herself. She weighs ten pounds, and yet it took four adult vets and vet techs to hold her still enough to get a burr out of her ear. They were amazed, and felt humbled. She hates my cat who has cancer because the cat has scratched her in the face many times, and the dog now senses that the cat is in a weakened state and really wants to go after her and finish her off. I've had to restrain the dog several times. If you started to walk into my bedroom, my Sheltie would take a huge chunk out of your leg, and he doesn't take to Mr. Grainne much better, either. He is totally protective of me, period, wherever I go. All of our dogs are basically polite outdoors, but they do like to bark. When small children make squeaky bobbley sounds and raise their little hands over their heads, the dogs feel somehow threatened, because they have no experience of children and that somehow is aggressive to them. If my daughter has a baby, I will have to take it very slow introducing the dogs, and stay with them all the time, even though none of the dogs I have are really known as problem breeds around children.
