Many doers don't bother with the book work.

I think you've stumbled upon one of the fundamental differences we have. I believe that most good professionals in their fields (the doers) have completed extensive and on-going "book work", whereas you seem to dismiss them as mere practitioners who are blind to the science of their profession. To say that Tiger Woods couldn't write equations for the kinetic simulation of a golf swing shows a lack, on your part, of appreciation for his education, intellect, drive and professionalism. Perhaps it's an engineering bias on your part or maybe your wife's gratuitous elitism is rubbing off on you. Either way, it's naive to make that kind of speculation IMO.
