The computer is more than the sum of the minds that created it. That is the core of emergent phenomena. Life is emergent. So are complex systems. I think I told you before, I hated hunting (after my first "successful" trip ) but even after renouncing hunting, I still liked marksmanship - to me it wasn't any different that throwing darts or some other acquired skill game. But I always liked personal competition as opposed to group competition. I liked to do better than I'd done before. I didn't really care how well other people did, but it did cause me to be humble. There are some great talents out there and they aren't always analytical. That isn't an insult, it is simply a fact. Bill misunderstood my lack of interest in baseball, and immediately went off on a tangent. Many years ago when I wasn't cloistered in my cubical, one of my favorite texts back in the days I used to shoot was a Russian translation by Yur'yev called "Competitive Shooting" published by Satan, I mean the NRA. It is out of print but I still own a copy. Very technical stuff including the physiology of heartbeats, geometry of stances and other stuff. I found it wasn't particularly useful knowing what to do if you don't have the wiring to sense it automatically. That is emergence. My point was missed completely about Tiger Woods and basketball players. They aren't where they are because they studied physics. They transcended physics. Is that a slam? Not to me, a student of Artificial Intelligence and apostate of reductionism. Yes, reading a book like Yur'yev's can make somebody a better marksman, but ... it's mostly in the genes. Low blood pressure, a naturally steady grip and best of all, good instinct. Some things can be coached like developing a consistent grip. Those things help, but they don't produce expert shots. But the rest, it isn't luck, discipline, coaching or training - its genetics and a certain kind of brain wiring.
