Bon jour, mes amis. The flags are flying at half staff here, too, but you would expect such a thing in Lourdes. Most of the merchants were closed this morning, as well. Also expected is the cold and wet weather in the Haute Pyrenees (sort of). The big surprise is this dratted non-standard keyboard.

See you back in the states soon. Maybe we will have more happening in the Islands by then.

I suspect it's because the Pope is regarded as something more of a world leader, given the structure of the Vatican and his role in world affairs. The Vatican is like a small country unto itself.

the flags were at half staff at my son's school yesterday and today.

Since we have the USSC going outside the country for legal advice to support their political decisions vice constitutional ones, the next step must be to lower our flag to half-mast when someone of note from another country dies.

Guess my question is: Why didn't we lower the flag for Gandhi or Mother Teresa?

Perhaps we weren't as sensitive then. :-)
