<When people are presented with a cogent argument that opposes their own view, they tend to retreat in one of two ways: they get rude, which I agree is regrettable, or they just refuse to discuss the subject as if their own view is the only possible correct one. >

There is another possibility. It is like a draw in chess where neither player can make a move without violating a rule of the game. That doesn't mean anyone is losing it means that the debate can't proceed.

In political or emotional topics, it frequently roots back to basic assumptions, first principles, which are unprovable assumptions. Religion is a good example.

Actually I am against gun control, but do not wish to discuss it. So you are not observing me correctly.

I see you are talking about me on another thread (after making incorrect assumptions about what my positions might be). I consider that far too rude to tolerate. Consider any possibility of conversation at an end. It might be nice if you could realize that going off to slam people on other threads is not the way to get people to talk to you (or not the way to get this people to talk to you. Other people might simply get irritated and fight with you about it, or about other things, as a way to work off their disapproval. But I'm not really interested in that.)
