I had a weird incident happen several years ago. A friend of mine hired a contractor to take down some trees, and the guy flipped out and had some kind of psychotic break, and freaked out his wife, so I drove him to his house, and he went in, got his gun, gave it to me, and then started talking to the tree guy. We had also dialed 911 on a cell phone. Anyway, I stood there with the gun in my hand while we waited for the cops to get there and my friend tried to talk the tree guy into putting down his chainsaw and going home.

When the cops showed up I told them that I was holding a gun and yes, it did make them cautious, but no more than the loony guy with the chain saw. ;^)

Neither of us, however, had broken the law. In fact, you can walk down the street holding a gun in your hand in most parts of the country and you haven't broken the law, as long as you don't brandish it, although you will certainly attract attention if you do it on a public sidewalk in a busy part of town, which I have seen.

I don't think anybody has ever noticed me carrying my gun in my hand to and from the car. I just hold it down by my side casually.

Given that you can carry a gun legally as long as you do it openly, what's the harm in concealed carry? Less likely to disturb the peace.

"The story made me wonder, if those with carry permits were such salt of the earth fellows as they are portrayed here, why would the officer change his tenor and become cautious?"
