- Initial jobless claims fell by 19,000 to 334,000 last week, according to the Labor Department. It was the biggest weekly decline in two months.

- For the second time in two days, the Senate Banking Committee was warned about the dangers of letting Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac get too large. Today, Treasury Secretary John Snow said: "The risks undertaken by the GSEs [government sponsored mortgage entities], if not properly managed, may pose a threat to their solvency, the stability of other financial institutions, and the strength of our economy." Fannie Mae (FNM) gained 1% and Freddie Mac (FRE) lost 0.05%.

- In its annual summer gasoline forecast, the Energy Information Agency predicted that the average price of a gallon of regular gasoline would peak at $2.35 a gallon in May and average $2.28 a gallon between April and September.
