I agree. I think the Popes pacifism is a strength much like for Ghandi. That moral standing is what imo deterred Soviet intervention into Poland as they had done to Hungary in 1956 and Czechoslovakia in 1968. If they tried to put down solidarity thru force they would have had one hell of a PR problem. Stalin said the pope has no batallions but this Pope had the hears and souls of tens of millions of people. And this is particularly powerful as the world shrinks and media covers all events very closely. No room to hide from this power. mike

Kumar,

being a pacifist is not necessarily a weakness. Mr Gandhi was one, and he influenced India's independance from the British Empire without violence.

But his blind pursuit of independence resulted in the Partition in which millions died. Pacifism may look noble, but its results can be deadly.

But pacifism's efficacy depends on the ability to persuade one's opponent with moral argument and concern for injustice. If it was the Russians instead of the British ruling India, Ghandhi wouldn't have been effective. He would've been dead, or in a gulag.
