Leadership is what is needed right now regarding Peak oil.Leadership that was demonstrated by bringing a nation together to put a man on the moon. Leadership as demonstrated by Jack Welch of GE or Lee Iacoca of Ford and Chrysler fame. The present leadership of, for example GM, is lacking. They had the lead in producing an all electric vehicle the EV1 And EV2 and squandered it, deciding to stop it's production and then destroying all of the remaining vehicles at a crucial time when peak oil was upon them, and concentrating instead on fuel cell prototypes which are years away and fraught with many problems including infrastructure. As has been said many times here on SI, 90 percent of the use for the automobile is about 100 miles per day or less, ideal for an all electric vehicle which could be charged overnight on the grid.Sadly most auto company's, do not want to go into an all electric, because they all know the consequences of the move, the almost complete loss of their secondary repair market ie muffler and exhaust repair, power train repair, pumps and hoses starter etc.,virtually the only thing needing replacing on an all electric is tire's.I hope that a company like Honda or Toyota will seize the opportunity and produce an all electric world car that can possibly be charged by solar(at home chargeable battery) and the grid, it sadly won't be done by the "big three," their leadership has lost it's vision for selfish reasons.
