Thanks for the good information. Do you know if moslems and hindus lived together in peace under british rule? If so india resemble an earlier example of yugoslavia after tito fell. mike

John, Your knowledge of Indian history is impressive. I'm no fan of Gandhi - he had his strenghts and his weaknesses like any human being. However, I maintain that he was influential in India's quest for independance from the British Empire.

Re Pakistan, yes that was a Jinnah led effort, and Gandhi was not successful in his attempt to stop it. It was inevitable at the time, and Gandhi essentially said "let there be 2 countries if that has to happen, but let us live in peace together". The latter part of his statement has been conveniently forgotten over the years.
