Joe, looks like Q306 for Merom/Conroe, and the reason (for coming only 2 quarters after Yonah) is that Yonah lacks EM64T).

pc.watch.impress.co.jp

japenglish from babelfish:

- Conroe which is called the desktop PC edition of Merom

As for Intel releasing the name officially, this time is unprecedented, but the name, itself Conroe, in the media the ? ? ? is as for, this time is not unprecedented. The name, Conroe, in the past,is introduced even withGoto's column.

The fact that it reaches the point where this name rises to rumor is from beginning of the year time 2004. A story that, the time, Intel examines, the desktop edition of Merom such as Merom DC and Conroe, reached the point where it is brought from information muscle.

As for Merom, you say that with the product which is developed as the succession of Yonah, according to information muscle throwing is planned into 3rd quarter 2006. The throwing Yonah although 1st quarter of 06 years it is planned, means that Merom is thrown after the only 2 quarters. At short period, why in remainder? With there probably is also the direction which is thought.

To tell the truth there is a reason there. If that orders expression x64 and Intel, EM64T (Extended Memory 64 Technology) to it is correspondence. Sort of previous report, Yonah does not correspond to x64. Problem is the timing, latter half this 2006. On the latter half 2006, PC means to enter big reform period.

Until you say, because Longhorn where Microsoft is the next generation Windows without release is done. According to information muscle, as for Microsoft you say that in the Longhorn generation, the plan which keeps implementing 64bit conversion rather enthusiastically is drawn. Actually, the story such as that testifies, that no human thing industry authorized personnel has explained, Microsoft so, Microsoft the possibility of keeping implementing 64bit conversion as the eyeball of Longhorn is high. When such as that, just Mobile PC is not 64bit, it is the case that condition is bad.

However, as for the thermal design electric power consumption of Merom you call 31W which is supposed with Yonah compared to by among other things increasing the overhead and the L2 cash capacity by mounting the 64bit order to 4MB, that somewhat it rises.

Actually, the next generation Centrino Mobile technology which Intel throws to the 1st quarter 2006 (CMT) Napa which is (??) in the platform, as for each note PC bender supposing the thermal design electric power consumption, 45W, it does the design. The chassis of note PC is modified to several years generally at only one time. For example, adjusting to the timing of Napa, when it throws the new chassis, if it becomes, after that 2 years to use that chassis, because it means to turn, you must design the processor and the like which in the future appears in prerequisite. Because of this, when from Intel it is explained to the OEM manufacturer that in the future of Merom it becomes 45W with such as version and the succession, it can expect properly.

Right now the race between the world's biggest chipmaker, Intel (nasdaq: INTC - news - people ), and its smaller, scrappy rival, Advanced Micro Devices (nyse: AMD - news - people ), is to be the first to release a server chip with two brains, and it appears that AMD is winning. Published reports today say that AMD will announce availability of an important technical milestone called dual-core chips, months ahead of schedule and months ahead of Intel, its most potent rival.
