Dude, a perfect market model assumes that businesses can't pull the wool over the eyes of consumers. But they can. They can make industries much more elastic than they otherwise would be if everyone had the same information.

If people had any idea why prices are really going up, the situation would be much different...

But, fine, I'll bite on your question. I also think that when I, who makes a pretty good living, am approaching a point where I spend equivalent to 7% of my after tax income on gasoline, yes, the government should do what it can to control the situation, not aid and abet it getting worse. And that's what it's doing... until recently, I did not believe that the oil men in office would act in their own personal interest against the interest of the people. God, I feel naive now.
