Kumar,

Yes - Gandhi was extremely influential and led the effort to free the entire subcontinent, not just India. However, many describe him as the embodiment of Thoreau's 'Civil Disobedience' and on that one subject I beg to differ. Thoreau was opposed to slavery and unjust war, but would never kill or stand idly by and let others kill to oppose it.

In the end he became consumed with independence - a justified cause. I would rather he be painted more correctly as a patriot than wrapped in the flag of sainthood.
