For now it is not sure if this is a sign that some customers are starting to wait for Montecito, or that it's really about the demise of Itanium, or a bit of both.

The sign is whether there are enough customers out there to service non-cluster HPC companies. Both SGI and Cray have their backs against the wall in this fight against Dell/HP/IBM/Sun/Fujitsu/Tier-2 2/4-way clusters even though both their products are superior. Itanium is a side issue as its fate is more closely linked to HP. Montecito will do nothing but enhance SGI and HP but it's still six months away.
