"some thousands", as CNN says, or even "tens of thousands", that's not very big for Baghdad, a city of 5 million with a majority Shia population.

With angry Sunni insurgents out to kill them...that's a pretty good showing. A lot of people don't go out at all.

These are Shiites, not Sunnies. You add the dissatisfaction of the Shiites to all the Sunnies and you have a power keg against the U.S. occupation.
