Ackerman - "Stray comments concerning the impending real estate crash perked up my e-mail on an otherwise dull Friday. I received from various sources, respectively, a CNBC report that 85% of the buyers in Miami’s condo market are speculators (probably true, according to an old friend of mine, a mortgage buyer who lives in a luxury high-rise on Miami Beach. I can attest that whenever I’ve visited her, the swimming pool and patio have been nearly empty of human traffic, other than some kids from places like Argentina, Brazil and Venezuela.); also, there was an article by Robert Shiller suggesting that home prices will crash as spectacularly as they’ve risen .. .. .. .."

My native american friend had a cabin in the woods in south georgia - he built it himself on land his father gave him - sold it for about 100K a few years ago to some hunting club millionaires - took some of the money and bought a ton of MRE's and bottles of jack daniels that he went and buried in 3 or 4 different states in the woods and forests. He does not understand why someone would slave away all day to make payments for a house for 30 years when they can lay around and get drunk and sleep under the stars and not be tied to one location. I do not believe he has ever worked a day in his life for pay - he always liked watching that movie the big lebowski.

I took him to dragoncon several years ago and we got hungry and there was no deer for him to go kill so we went to peachtree center to eat and I pulled out a 20 to buy us some chinese food - he said no shades - I show you old indian trick - so he looks for the most beautiful sexiest body women in the mall - several have ordered the meals - take one or 2 bites - close the styrofoam boxes up and leave it on the table or throw it in the trash - he ate like a king. He slept in his van on the street instead of the 140 a night room . He does not understand why white man do such crazy things sometimes.

Well the NY Times trumped that with the $1M trailer park home in Malibu.
nytimes.com

Not sure it if it was double-wide, or not, or whether it was just the trailer and not the land, since 8 hours have passed since ingestion of the article which did not show the interior or provide many facts. (Nice ocean view though.)

The lead in was: "In Malibu, trailer parks are being transformed into the new playground for the rich." (Great fiction writing, said as fact.)

I suspect the real rich aren't flocking to the trailer parks yet, but have no doubt that people are for some reason willing to over-pay for junk in many places. Alternatively, if we're all "rich" like that, there's a currency problem and I should steal the wheelbarrow, after tossing the cash in it. I wonder who wrote the loan for the million dollar trailer park item. Maybe they got a commission.
