"after refrigerators started to use less electricity, people tended to buy 2 of them"

Jevon's paradox. It's a hell of a doozie. In order to do anything about this, we would need to revert to a steady state/zero growth economy. This would require abolishing our current one:

"...an economic model based of infinite growth but fueled by finite natural resources is doomed."

P.S. Long term, geologic reality will abolish our current economic system for us.

""The short term result of everyone buying wind-up alarm clocks and smaller cars is an increase in oil usage - because there's a big oil cost for each of those things.""

I did not suggest anyone buy a wind up alarm clock. If many smaller cars are made rather than large ones there has to be a net saving in oil cost.

""Which is not to deny conservation would at least slow down the results of peak oil (though after refrigerators started to use less electricity, people tended to buy 2 of them).""

I can speak for myself here.We have replaced all of our appliances to energy star rating including water on demand hot water heater and hi efficiency furnace and have watched monthly bills go into power dive.I just got off the "jewel of the fleet" and here it is here..

People can do what they want and by 2 or 3 of them, they can also put a sledge hammer through their old toilet and rip the door off their old fridge before turnig it in for disposal.

""In Europe hallways are dark, until a sensor detects a person there, and the light temporarily comes on. Those sensors have existed for AT LEAST 25 years. How much oil do they save?""

I do not know,at least they have been doing the smart thing for "AT LEAST 25 years."<g>
