I don't know. I know very little about it. But if it's consensual and people like it, I'm ok with it. Mentally unhealthy to me means you 1. can't sustain relationships- sexual, marital, parental 2. can't function in the world and keep a job, go to school, pay your bills, do the lifeskill tasks we all need to do and 3. you're often deeply unhappy. I can see how two people who were in to S and M might be able to do everything above (be good parents, have a relationship, have good jobs, be succeful adults, be happy), in which case I wouldn't think they were really mentally unhealthy. I think when we judge mental health it's way too easy to project our own prejudices on the issue- so I prefer to look at physical manifestations of our state of mental health (except for the happiness one, which though non-physical, has nothing to do with any particular type of behavior or action or belief) "Most" people at one time thought miscegenation was wrong. I don't find the "most" people argument very compelling- and it is also one of the fallacies, because it doesn't really prove anything, except that an idea (or prejudice) is common.
