RTS- I'm all for riding the cyclical waves, that is my
investing/trading style and has been for years. It is hard
for a stock with 1.68B shares outstanding to move up when
it only trades an average of 34M shares a day. That is only
an average 1% (17M) of buy transactions (2% buy/sell) on a daily average basis. About 67% of the outstanding shares are owned by institutional investors which represents roughly 1.12B shares.
As far as institutional investors accumulating stocks during
times when they are out of favor... that is correct. After
enough stocks have been acquired, it is common for the
analysts to start hyping the "value" and growth potential
aspects by upgrading their stock rating. Usually this
is when economic factors look favorable for the sector or
stock.
I like to see an obvious trend developing to play the upward
momentum, but also evaluate the business conditions that
affect the sector. Just because a stock is a low price does
not mean that it is necessarily a great value... Like you
said, timing is everything!
