It probably has a lot to do with the toxicity of the plant and the nastiness of the taste. Extremely toxic mushrooms are said to be extremely delicious. Fugu, a fish which contains neurotoxins, is also said to be delicious, and non-toxic if properly prepared. If improperly prepared, the only hint that you have ingested poison will be a slight tingling in the lips shortly after you swallow, before the pain begins.

As for improperly prepared manioc/cassava, the fatal compound is cyanide, which shouldn't taste bad. We ingest low levels of cyanide when we eat foods flavored with bitter almond oil, which I find quite tasty, at least in small doses.

Properly prepared manioc/cassava is commonly eaten in the US in the form of tapioca pudding, which I also find extremely tasty.

My guess is that the dessert in question probably tasted rather good, except to picky eaters. How else can we explain 30 dead kids?
