I think the yuan should have been rising against the dollar for at least a decade, but this has been prevented by the peg. Trade wars aren't good for anyone, but something has to be done. China holds a lot of our debt - I'm not sure we profit from pissing off our banker. I think something like 40% of Chinese exports get sold in the US, so they would feel the pain too.
I think China needs to be forced to unpeg their currency, to have a floating currency governed by market forces, like everyone else. Perhaps they'll revalue and do this, and avoid the whole trade war scenario. The US administration is against a Chinese tariff.
