No more need for conductors on trains now that computers are replacing them - what will they do now? write software?? Sit on the beach? Suicide bomb the subway train?

Sleep with the kids?

As asimov's robots replace the people - why must there be social chaos and destructive behavior - why can't there be more people sitting on the beach, sitting in the movie theater, sitting in the library - why does it have to be more people rioting and suicide bombing - why are idle hands the devil's work and not buddha's? Why can't all the free time coming to humans be used to do fun good things instead of create trouble? I met 2 kids throwing eggs at some hobo's for fun, I said why don't you go home and play some nintendo or xbox or go ride your bikes or read a book. Why is throwing eggs at a bumb more fun than killing a thug in grand theft auto vice city? There are so many books to read, games to play, movies to watch, volunteer services to perform that could fill up more than many lifetimes. We all sit here typing away about economics - not suicide bombing with our free time. There is hope.

I agree that the US is more of a wild card. We are heavily armed and, for advanced civilizations, behave like the huge teenager on the block. We haven't shredded ourselves since 1865; Europe on the other hand has many scars and have citizens far more motivated to seek non lethal solutions.

Still... K-winter has a way of revealing where cauldron's have been brewing and suddenly boil over.
