TJay, you are on the right track, but polluted by racist thoughts about the FILTHy English colonists from London. <so we must not conclude that HK's success, outrageous for a rock with zilch for resources, and nada for capital, has more to do the run-of-the-mill Failed-In-London-Try-HK ("F.I.L.T.H.") that came ashore from yonder than to the the great people of Money Rock Hong Kong :0) > It was the combination which done it. As you can see from Mao's maelstrom, it was not the wonderful superior Chinese clones what done it. Neither was it the FILTHy English. It was the superior English freedom and capitalism and private property and rule of law and stuff, adopted by said willing to work and think local yokels, unable to vote for socialism and state handouts as said FILTHy English landlords didn't give them a vote. The English [and Indians and Clonist Chinese] were all conned by that damned German Karl Marx who moved into London in a 19th century invasion of the mind, which is far more effective than a physical invasion, which is enthusiastically repelled. [I am making up history there and maybe Karl wasn't German and perhaps he was born in England, but I think I remember rightly]. The silly Indians threw out the British, but kept the British Disease of socalism/communism, unionism and kleptocracy. China did the same. As shown around the world, voting can be nothing better than giving people a box full of heroin and carton of marijuana and truckload of booze with warehouse of cigarettes. If they choose self-indulgence, kleptocracy and Pleasure Island, the road to hell is paved with their bodies and suffering and the good intentions of the democratic constitutionalists.
