Actually, American and European Catholics widely ignore the preachings of the Pope and Church in Rome. Catholics in America come down on the issues just as the rest of the American population does. IMO, the reason religion is separated from state is that the state has the ability to move forward while most religions sit in one place, are pulled kicking and screaming into the future or try to move backwards in time. It's funny, I find it hard to believe that the mega multinational corporation known as the Catholic church would be considered a solely theological institution.
