I would not want to be the the army mate of a soldier who is patrolling Baghdad's roads, green on 8 weeks of training....it just takes much longer to train a soldier properly to have the discipline and the steady nerves to respond to emergencies. And it takes a very long time to build cohesiveness of military units. Otherwise, you are sending dangerous greenhorns with guns (big ones) out in the streets.

I didn't ask you whether you want to be army mates with someone patrolling downtown Baghdad. I asked how many months do you think it takes to train an Iraqi to man a roadside checkpoint? Or even how many months training is required for an Iraqi to man the checkpoint on the road to the airport where the coalition shot at the escaped Italian journalist?

And if you think it takes more than one month to man a checkpoint, what in the world do you think they learn in the second month that couldn't have been learnt in the first?

Not every Iraqi civil defense person is part of the Iraqi version of SWAT.
