Most of what I know about the Marines came from reading "Battle Cry" by Leon Uris. My dad was a Marine. His service was stateside after his sea duty was completed because he was the sharp kind of guy they needed to recruit the cream of the crop before the Army got them. After that they needed sharp guys to fly gliders, but when that program was cancelled he became a navigator on a PBJ (=B-25), since he didn't have a high school diploma. He didn't talk about the military much, except to say it tended to make good men better and bad men worse.

I'm a bit in awe of Marines. I think my poor hearing betrayed me by keeping me out.

<<but the M1 Garand weighed a little over 9 pounds>>

Every time I haul mine out I wonder how the hell a guy could tote this thing and still be ready to go into battle.
