China first quarter trade up 23 pc

(IANS News) Beijing: China's foreign trade volume increased to $295.2 billion in the first quarter of 2005, up 23.1 percent year-on-year, led mainly by good growth in the processing goods sector, Xinhunet reported.
Exports totalled $155.9 billion, up 34.9 percent while imports at $139.3 billion were up 12.2 percent year-on-year, according to statistics released by the General Administration of Customs (GAC).

In March, the value of China's exports amounted to $60.87 billion dollars, up 32.8 percent but 3.4 percentage points less than the growth rate in the first two months. Imports stood at $55.14 billion, up 18.6 percent but 10.3 percentage points more than the growth rate of the first two months.

Trade volume between China and its major partners, the European Union and the US, grew fast in the first quarter.
