OT, RE: MD salaries

Actually, average MD salaries have declined a lot over the last decade, especially if you're talking about internists and primary care physicians, which make up the bulk of MDs. HMOs for all practical purposes determine their salaries, and they have been consistently cutting pay.

Lizzie,

There is the "protectionism" true, but the high cost of health care in the US is also due to outright abuse by the Hospitals and Doctors within them.

We lost a close friend of the family last year. He was 87 years old and unfortunately, spent his last 10 days hospitalized, seldom conscious. He was, at times, on a respirator, but wanted no other life saving attachments.

He was covered by Medicare/caid.

We recently saw a copy of his final bill. A total of 7 doctors checked in on him during those final 10 days performing various functions. While most of them seemed excessive to me, the most ridiculous was over $14000 for a dermatologist who checked him twice daily and had him on medications for his "extremely dry skin".
