You are right, of course, and Winn is wrong. In the few days after the official surrender of August 15, 1945, the US navy several times observed armed military men on cliffs persuading or forcing crowds of women and children to jump from the cliff. They followed. Suicide was considered the right thing to do. Japan had a culture of deep respect for the person who commits suicide. Presumably the Japanese military didn't want to commit suicide and let all other Japanese people enjoy life. To be defeated in war was the ultimate shame. Well the Japan of 2005 isn't like that, but some people there want to return to those attitudes.
