Huge companies like this get all kinds of accusations hurled at them. Perhaps they were convicted of something, but I don't recall it.

Are you playing? This was nearly ten years ago but most people in the markets then knew about it. I don't remember the details but the accusations weren't idle gossip on SI. The Feds were involved. Beyond that I don't know the details.
