re: Still, care is advised. Too many on the left demonize making a profit.

I agree. But XOM made a record profit for any US company ever last quarter. And they deserve excellent profits, they are a very efficient, well run company. But, they are not substantially investing in the future of oil, they are riding the current wave. You get into political v. economic questions and it's a tough call. I have to fall on the side of the greater good in this case. Too much at stake.

re: I'm thinking about things like the round-trip trades of the energy Co's in CA, as well as similar round-trip sales of goods & services between dot coms in the internet bubble. I'd like to see third parties (the public) be able to examine that level of detail in pretty much real time. CEO's would wail at the level of examination, but if one is allowed to print money (stock) then I think the business should be quite transparent. The downside is that competitors have access to the transparency as well. As long as the competitor is also public, it is a relatively level playing field, but with new business dynamics.

I don't know. Mixed feelings.

Too many on the left demonize making a profit.

That's such an old demon. I had thought Clinton had put that one to rest.
