Just look at the scripts for popular TV crime dramas like "CSI" and "Law and Order." The plots hinge on whether a person, alive or dead, gay or straight, out or in, is or was, now or ever shall be, is really what he or she (and derivations thereof), APPEARS to be. In other words, you can't believe your own eyes anymore! That seems to be the state of affairs these days.
