JAKARTA (AFP) - Indonesia's precarious bond with the violent geological forces that rage beneath the archipelago was being underlined as a second volcano sprang to life in the wake of a series of terrifying quakes.

Tangkuban Perahu, a smouldering 2,076-metre (6,933 foot) mountain near the city of Bandung on Java island, began rumbling overnight, prompting scientists to raise the status of the volcano to "alert" and declare it off limits.

Agreed it's not a good situation. But even if the notoriously corrupt Indonesian government were to turn honest overnight, you'd still have the world's fourth most populous country concentrated in a geologically active region. Java is nothing but a string of volcanoes, but if it weren't for them, we'd be talking about massive famines there.
OTOH, we're not talking about evacuating China, either:
