They can be participants in the funeral but they are not allowed to take communion??? That makes little sense to me.

Anyone can be a participant in the funeral.

BTW thousands upon thousands of people in St. Peter's Square took communion at the end of the service. Do you think they were all Catholics?

The majority of them yes. All of them? No.
