I am continually impressed by how excellent the English of all the current and recent Chinese students I know is (in the US and 3 years ago in Australia). Some have better speech and some better writing but they are all good. Even students who are still in China that I correspond with. Now this wasn't at all the case 15 years or 10 years ago when I was a grad student in Boston. The Chinese people I met then mostly had relatively poor English and poor pronunciation.
